BORN IN THE SEVENTIES
Born in the Seventies: A Spanish Perspective of Contemporary Painting
Curator: Juan Manuel Bonet
Initiated by the Spanish Embassy in Turkiye, Born in the Seventies showcases works by twenty-one Spanish painters, curated by Juan Manuel Bonet, former director of IVAM, Reina Sofía, and Instituto Cervantes. This is Bonet's first exhibition focused on artists born from 1970 onwards, a generation shaped by Spain’s democracy and its cultural institutions like Reina Sofía and IVAM.
These artists, benefiting from opportunities such as the Erasmus program and international grants, have developed a diverse range of styles, blending figurative and abstract elements. Their work often engages with other art forms, including literature, music, and flamenco. They also draw inspiration from both Spanish masters and international movements like American action painting and Latin American geometric art.
The twenty-one selected paintings, sourced from galleries in Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, Santander, Badajoz, and Valencia, reflect the vitality and dynamism of the contemporary Spanish painting scene.
