1.1. Contemporary Istanbul Objectives
Contemporary Istanbul is an international contemporary art fair focused on presenting and selling works of contemporary art of outstanding merit and quality. Contemporary Istanbul serves as a bridge between galleries, collectors, and museums, fostering a borderless exhibition of art and culture through contemporary and modern art, programming, and dialogues.
Contemporary Istanbul’s 20th Edition aims to showcase and facilitate the sale of multiple unique works from the 20th and 21st centuries, with a particular emphasis on avant-garde and contemporary art. As an international art fair, it will place special focus on featuring GALLERIES that have made significant contributions to the global art scene and have had a notable international impact.
In this context, Contemporary Istanbul seeks to:
- Showcase the activities of international galleries that offer a comprehensive view of 20th and 21st-century art creation.
- Accurately reflect the most recent trends and developments in the global visual arts scene.
- Ensure a high level of professionalism through the quality of exhibitions, strong relationships with collectors, and collaborations with museums and art institutions.
- Support the promotion, dissemination, and collection of contemporary art.
- Provide valuable information through its publications and digital platforms.
2.1. General Conditions of Participation
This Exhibitor Submission, completed in its entirety and accompanied by the requested information and materials, constitutes a submission for exhibition space in the 20th edition of Contemporary Istanbul in September 2025. All submissions will be reviewed, then accepted or declined at the sole discretion of Contemporary Istanbul and its Selection Committee, which will assess them based on their merit and the exhibition concept developed for the fair, by no later than May 30, 2025.
Upon signing of the Exhibitor Submission with the approved list of artist(s), the Exhibitor is prohibited to add or remove artist(s) from the initial list, without written consent of CI Selection Committee. The latter may be overruled due to unforeseen events concerning artist or exhibitor.
The Exhibitor will be held responsible for abiding by the exhibition proposal and the booth layout they submitted unless changes are communicated with and confirmed by the fair management and Selection Committee. Clear and consistent communication between CI and Exhibitors is crucial to ensuring the integrity and quality of the exhibition environment throughout the fair. By agreeing to participate, each selected Exhibitor acknowledges and accepts this condition.
2.2. Exhibitors
Preference will be given to galleries that demonstrate a meaningful contribution to the contemporary art market through the overall quality, originality, and diversity of their gallery policies, events, and displayed works.
Exhibitors must submit a statement, taking full responsibility, affirming their ongoing and uninterrupted operation as a GALLERY based on the following requirements:
- A minimum of two years of continuous operation without closure
- Operating hours and opening dates align with standard practices for such venues
- At least four distinct exhibitions per year, open to the public with free entry during regular hours
Failure to meet these criteria will result in the rejection of the submission for the 20th Edition of Contemporary Istanbul, and those submissions will not be considered.
2.3. Criteria for Admissions & Selection
Submissions to participate in the 20th edition of Contemporary Istanbul shall only be accepted from GALLERIES that present, exclusively, 20th and 21st century artworks, regardless of whether they have participated in previous editions of Contemporary Istanbul. The works they display should demonstrate exceptional quality and significance.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to request additional information and materials from an exhibitor at any time to evaluate their submission. Failure to provide the required materials by the specified deadline will result in the rejection of the submission. Admittance to past editions of Contemporary Istanbul does not automatically guarantee admission to subsequent editions.
All exhibitos regardless of whether they have participated in previous editions, will be evaluated. Once the necessary quality criteria have been met, GALLERIES will be invited to participate in CI in strict order of scoring, provided that there is available space.
The Selection Committee may, in strict adherence to the scoring order, fill any vacancies left by GALLERIES originally selected, and include those GALLERIES who, although having met the quality requirements, were not assigned a space due to limited availability (WAITING LIST). Any GALLERIES that have been placed on the waiting list or have not met the required standards to participate in the fair, will be notified accordingly.
The WAITING LIST will be filled by exhibitors who the CI Exhibitor Relations Department, deems eligible to participate, having obtained the necessary scores according to the required quality criteria (FINAL WAITING LIST). Once the FINAL WAITING LIST is complete, the Selection Committee will proceed to fill all vacancies as described above.
CI Exhibitor Relations will notify the exhibitor GALLERIES if they have been accepted as an EXHIBITOR, allowing them to make the necessary payments within the specified deadlines in the Submission Form. Failure to comply with these payment deadlines will result in the exhibitor’s removal from the list of EXHIBITORS, and CI Exhibitor Relations may assign their spot to the next gallery on the waiting list.
The EXHIBITING GALLERY (hereafter referred to as the EXHIBITOR), through its authorized representative(s), assumes the obligation to comply with both the Specific and General Participation Rules, as well as the conditions outlined in the Submission Form and subsequent Participation Agreement, related to registration fees, payment schedules, assembly and preparation dates for stands, insurance, and other relevant matters.
The EXHIBITOR's decision not to participate in CI is subject to CI's General Regulations for Participation and will result in the dissolution of the contractual relationship between the Exhibitor and CI, according to the terms and conditions specified in that article and may be subject to an early termination fee.
2.4. Contract Conditions
Contemporary Istanbul is not liable for any losses/damages occurring on the premises. Exhibitors are suggested to insure their own artworks and other necessary valuables in their booth. Contemporary Istanbul provides Third Party Liability insurance. M arine Cargo Insurance including loading and unloading processes to and from the gallery and the fairgrounds, coverage being valid throughout the exhibition period, is the responsibility of the Exhibitor.
The Exhibitor will be asked to pay 50% of their total balance within 7 days of countersigning of the agreement. The remainder of the balance shall be paid in the subsequent 30 days after signing with no exceptions. The Exhibitor will also be asked to provide a valid credit card as a guarantee.
The Exhibitor agrees to read and sign an acknowledgement of the Logistics Manual detailing the shipment, customs, and transportation procedures and suggestions of Contemporary Istanbul.
Participation of exhibitor GALLERIES shall be determined by the CI Selection Committee. These decisions will be made in accordance with the Conditions outlined in these Specific Rules, and the points assigned to each exhibitor according to the Evaluation Criteria based on the information submitted by the exhibitor GALLERIES.
